We have heard stories of people loosing thousands and millions to internet fraudsters, a.k.a Yahoo Boys or local boys. These criminals come at you like friends, but all they want is to wreck our lives.
Although stories are bound, but we still hear fresh cases of bank scams. The other day, a student of G.O university Enugu, woke to an SMS from his bank, notifying him of a transaction that has cleared his savings.
There’s no doubt that internet Banking has made life easy for us. With internet banking, we have access to our account each time. Transactions are done faster too. With this ease of transaction, comes the risks that accompanies it. Fraudsters employ many social engineering techniques to scam the unguarded customer. For this reason, you should learn how to protect your account.
Among the tactics used by these Fraudsters, is PHISHING.
Phishing is simply, when you receive a call, sms or mail, that appears to be from your bank. Such notifications try to convince you that they are from your bank.
They always come as an emergency.
They wont fail to give you a sense of urgency, they will always ask for those secret documents and numbers from your bank.
They can also send links, that give them a backdoor to access all the files on your computer, Emails and Phone. They can be so real, they go the extra mile to send the mail with your bank letterhead, logo etc! Simply put, they try to be as real as your bank.
since they are this good, how then can you tell whether its a Phishing attempt or the real thing?
